The benefits of essential oils in skincare

There’s so much to love about essential oils. Not only do they add a beautiful fragrance to the products, but our carefully chosen essential oils and blends help to supercharge your skincare.

It’s really important to us that our soap and skincare products are unadulterated and use the best that the earth has to offer. There’s actually a lot that goes into our formulations, including a careful consideration of each individual ingredient we use.

Here we explain a bit of the science behind that process to help you understand the benefits of essential oils in skincare.

The power of essential oils in skincare

Essential oils are plant extracts. They come from the flowers, bark, stem, leaves, roots or fruit of a plant and can be extracted by cold-pressing or through distillation via steam/water. When mixed with a carrier oil (such as jojoba or sweet almond), the result is a beautifully aromatic oil.

The fragrance is one thing, but there are many other skin benefits of essential oils. Research has shown that some essential oils may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Essential oils in skincare may help with things such as reducing skin redness and inflammation, nourishing dry skin, balancing oily skin or evening out skin tone.

The benefits of the skincare will depend on the essential oils used. More on that later.

Quality matters

At the end of the day, it doesn’t actually matter which essential oils are used in skincare, unless they are pure and high-quality. Essential oils that have added synthetic oils or additives or that have been altered during the extraction process offer little to no benefit, other than fragrance.

There’s actually a bit more to it than that. Anyone can mix an essential oil into a carrier oil and call it skincare. It takes serious knowledge and expertise to blend a combination of essential oils and ingredients to create skincare that actually works.
